Alternate Hotel Options for DrupalCon Chicago

After a week full of accommodations wrangling, we’ve managed to secure appropriate alternatives to the sold-out Drupal Tower! While there are still a few rooms left in the Drupal Tower toward the end of the conference, several nights are now completely sold out.

So, how do you feel about five-star accommodations for the same price as the Drupal Tower?

DrupalCon Chicago Scholarship Recipients Announced

The recipients of the DrupalCon Chicago scholarships have been selected.

We received an incredible 105 scholarship applications for DrupalCon Chicago. After careful deliberation, the scholarship committee has decided to award scholarships to the people mentioned below.

This year the our evaluation process was merit-based. Applicants were evaluated based on their Drupal code contributions or contributions to the Drupal community. A special priority was given to core maintainers to celebrate their hard work on Drupal 7 and in anticipation of the discussions about Drupal 8 that will be featured in DrupalCon Chicago’s Core Conversations.

Drupal Tower Sells Out Sunday and Monday; Other Nights Still Available

We’ve always had a sneaking suspicion that the Drupal community is incredibly active and strong but today, we’ve received rock-solid proof. The Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers has officially sold out of available rooms for the beginning of DrupalCon Chicago due to the demand by the Drupal community.

Last Friday, 1/14, saw a record-breaking amount of registrations in one day (286 - more than double the previous record of 114) and encouraged the extension of the early bird registration through today (1/21). Unfortunately, we've also found the number of available rooms at the Drupal Tower (also known as the Sheraton, but let’s not nit-pick) is not enough to house members of the enthusiastic community for the entirety of the event.

Rooms are still available for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, but if you were looking to sneak into town a few days early and stay in the Drupal Tower, Sunday and Monday are no longer available.

The DrupalCon team is working diligently on a solution to find additional rooms for these nights and will announce it as soon as possible. In the meantime, if you haven't yet registered for DrupalCon Chicago, now is definitely the time to do so - our amazing Drupal community is growing larger and stronger each year!

Early Bird Registration Deadline Extended to January 21!

Here at DrupalCon headquarters, we’ve been delighted and overwhelmed with the number of folks registering to attend DrupalCon Chicago. As you can see from our registration graph, the number of people registering to attend has skyrocketed since the release of Drupal 7, and in the last few days, the all-time record for most DrupalCon registrations in a single day was shattered twice in a row!

DrupalCon Chicago is shaping up to be an awesome event, with attendees from all corners of the world representing dozens of industries and professions. It will be a place where designers, developers, project managers, businesspeople, and others will come together, share information, and learn from some of the brightest minds in the Drupal community and beyond.

In light of this tremendous response, we have decided to extend the Early Bird Registration deadline one week in order to accommodate everyone who wants to attend. A lot of folks have contacted us this week letting us know that they needed more time to complete paperwork necessary for them to attend, and we wanted to make sure everyone the opportunity to register at the Early Bird price. We ask those who have contacted us to be patient; we are working to fulfill customer service requests as quickly as possible.

If you have not yet registered to attend DrupalCon Chicago yet, you now have until January 21 to purchase your ticket at the Early Bird price. Some rooms in the Drupal Tower are still available, but we do anticipate selling out the hotel on at least some of the conference days, so don’t forget to reserve your room as well.

We also want to remind folks about the pre-conference training sessions, which also only have limited capacity. These sessions are a great way to gain in-depth knowledge and get up-to-speed with Drupal 7 before the main conference starts.

We hope to see you here in Chicago this March 7-10!

Get Together With Birds of a Feather at DrupalCon Chicago!

This year, DrupalCon will again be providing room for "Birds of a Feather" sessions, or BoFs as they are more commonly known (it is commonly pronounced 'boff'). These sessions allow ad-hoc groups to meet and discuss a particular interest, how to scratch a particular itch, or really any topic that is on their mind. The format is unstructured and the topics are all over the map. This is what makes them great.

Get Up to Speed With Drupal 7 at DrupalCon Chicago!

Today is the day that many of us have been waiting for: the official release of Drupal 7! DrupalCon may still be two months away, but if you’re planning on attending, there are many sessions you can attend to help you get up to speed on the latest release.

Now Accepting Proposals for Core Conversations

Proposals are now open for the Core Conversations track. We'll be accepting proposals through 21 January.

The Core Conversations track is an evolution of the "Developers Summit" from previous DrupalCons. Rather than a pre-conference day it is a separate, side-track for more focused, future-looking proposals for Drupal Core, Drupal.org, and Drupal Documentation.

Core Conversations will be held in a separate, smaller room from the main tracks, and will be heavily discussion oriented. Each session should begin with either one 30 minute or two 15 minute presentations on how to improve some aspect of Core, Drupal.org, or Documentation followed by 30 minutes of discussion. The goal is to give advanced, engaged developers a sort of "conference within a conference" to focus on the highly thorny issues that can only be properly addressed in person.

Sessions Announced for DrupalCon Chicago

The DrupalCon Chicago organizing committee is pleased to announce the selection of sessions from proposals submitted by the Drupal community. Drawn from nearly 350 publicly-submitted session proposals, these sessions represent the full breadth and depth of the community’s knowledge and expertise.

While the sessions announced today represent the bulk of the session program, some additional sessions will be added over the coming week. The complete and finalized session schedule will be announced in mid-January, 2011. DrupalCon Chicago will be held March 7-10, 2011.
