Drupal health care application: patient consumer empowerment through resource match making

Track:
Business and Strategy
Experience:
Intermediate

Discussion and demo on a real Drupal application currently in the final stage of development. The session focuses on the use of Drupal and several contributed modules being the core building block without any modifications. The application extends the traditional use of Drupal as a CMS and fully utilizes the potentials of Drupal as a full application development platform, in this case, a full featured consumer health care web product that links patient consumers with providers through a business concept of resource matching. The application also embodies the latest health care trends and reform elements: Accountable Care Organization, Health Information Exchange, Electronic Health Records, and patient empowerment. The application is a good example of how Drupal is being fully deployed in the health care industry. The actual application will be used to illustrate the development or business concepts throughout the session.

Intended audience:

Developers, health care professionals, or entrepreneurs with an intermediate or advanced level of Drupal experience.

Reaching the medically under-served

What a great combination: open source and linking patients with providers. I have just returned from the Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), where the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius, highlighted the danger of creating an information technology divide in health services impacting those communities with less access to these tools. My focus is on leveraging several Drupal features, and communication channels, to promote the delivery of health information and services to all, and I am very interested in where this project intersects with Health Information Exchanges and Electronic Health Records.
