Making mobile websites with Drupal

Creating a mobile website is turning from a "nice to have" feature to a real necessity. Reaching out to your users or interacting with them does not happen on the desktop alone anymore. The mobile phone is increasingly important and will eventually become the number one internet device. Knowing that in Q3 of 2010, 417 million units where sold, an increase of smartphone sales of 96%, we can easily see it's relevance.

However, building mobile websites is for many developers still an unknown craft, and before you start building a mobile website it is highly recommended to have a good understanding of the main technologies involved. What are existing frameworks and best practices you can use? We are going to give you a DrupalCon style crash course in mobile web development with Drupal.

This session aims at giving developers and project managers a broad view of the mobile landscape, and I will help you understand what technologies to use and what pitfalls to avoid before you start a mobile project. On top of that, the session will give several tips and code examples that illustrate some of the best practices.

Following topics will be covered within this session:

  • Overview of the current state of Drupal related to Mobile
  • Mobile browser technologies and approaches to target most of them
  • Device categorization, template diversification and media queries
  • HTML 5 support on mobile browsers
  • Tools in Drupal
  • Caching strategies for mobile
  • Mobile web testing
  • Client communication and scope definition

During the session, mobile websites, made by Northpoint will be used to showcase the concepts presented during the session.
