Granular Permissions Module
Victor from Amherst College here, I was the one who ranted briefly about our module, Monster Menus now in use by us and Middlebury College for creating granular permissions. This circumvents the downsides from using organic groups or drupal multisite. I did my best to explain this in an elevator pitch, but it's tough to distill all the features of this module in 5 minutes.
The module has been in use in production for years now and has been very well refined and has a newly rewritten API. It is free and open source and we are always looking for collaborators, so let us know if you are interested!
