Core Conversations

What are Core Conversations?

DrupalCon serves many purposes. It is an opportunity for the community to come together and share knowledge and skills about Drupal development. It is an opportunity to reach out to the wider Web development community and bring more people to Drupal. It is an opportunity for the community to get together and celebrate its considerable achivements.

It is also an opportunity for developers to get together to discuss and plan future development of the platform. Being able to meet face to face is far more efficient than discussing via online chat or a forum. Many of Drupal's most important features have been the result of in-person meetings and conversations by developers who were able to talk to just the right people at just the right time.

The Core Conversations track, previously known as the Developers Summit, is a way to encourage those sorts of important conversations by bringing together key members of the Drupal community to discuss, mull over, and plan future directions of the Drupal project itself.

Each Core Conversations session will include one or two short presentations by people doing work in the Drupal community on a given subject followed by an open discussion period. Hopefully those conversations will continue throughout the rest of the conference. Topics could range anywhere from an overhaul of the user module to ways to vastly step up our documentation capabilities.

Are Core Coversations for me?

The target audience who would get the most out of a Core Conversations session are those actively engaged in pushing Drupal forward:

• People actively engaged in developing and furthering Drupal core.
• People actively engaged in developing and furthering the Drupal.org infrastructure so that it can better support the rapidly growing Drupal community.
• People actively engaged in developing and furthering Drupal documentation.
• People with specific proposals for how to improve some aspect of Drupal core, the Drupal.org infrastructure, or documentation.

If you are new to Drupal, work mostly in contrib space, or simply want to learn more about Drupal and Drupal development then you will get far more out of the regular sessions, particularly in the Coder, Themer, and Site Building tracks.

How will Core Conversations be selected?

In early January or so we will open a call for session proposals for Core Conversations. These sessions should run either 15 or 30 minutes long at most. The organizing comittee will then work to identify common trends and patterns and setup a series of sessions with one or two presenters on related topics. Presenters will be announced in early February to give people enough time to coordinate and put together their presentations.

Each session should have at least a half hour of discussion following the presentations. Of course, hopefully they'll all be so interesting that the conversation continues well into the night and throughout the conference.
