Ivan Boothe

Ivan Boothe is the creative director of Rootwork, working with nonprofits and social change groups about how to build online movements; engaging, supporter-driven websites; and real-world activism that takes advantage of online social networks. Ivan is a community organizer with Casino-Free Philadelphia and the online communications coordinator for the Fellowship of Reconciliation. Ivan has experience in a number of social change and nonprofit groups, including co-founding the Genocide Intervention Network and why-war.org, which launched a nationwide campaign of electronic civil disobedience against the voting machine manufacturer Diebold in 2003.

Ivan is the co-organizer of NetSquared Philadelphia, part of a national NetSquared organization focusing on the intersection of nonprofits and social technology. He has presented on technology and activism at DrupalCon, the Nonprofit Technology Conference, the 2010 U.S. Social Forum, the Peace and Justice Studies Conference, the National Press Club and the Change the Web series.

Ivan holds a degree in peace and conflict studies and authored a thesis on third-party nonviolent intervention. He's done hundreds of hours of training and facilitation, including trainings with Casino-Free Philly (nonviolent civil disobedience), Philly Students for a Democratic Society (anti-oppression), SweatFree Communities Northwest (strategic planning) and the Responsible Endowments Coalition (anti-oppression). Ivan is on the board of directors for the Peace and Justice Studies Association and the AFSC Nobel Peace Prize Committee.

Ivan's technical skills include more than 15 years of web development, including semantic, standards-compliant XHTML and CSS, as well as extensive work with Drupal and WordPress content-management systems. He is a professional handbell ringer and enthusiastic member of his local member-owned food cooperative
