Thank you for setting this up Avi.
Setting up Varnish, PressFlow and MemCache
This would be a really good way to improve the speed of Drupal install. Great discussion, nice to know I'm having similar issues as others here. I'd love to have a higher ed Drupal Camp that could focus exclusively on our individual set of challenges.
High performance group
The high performance group on groups.drupal.org is an excellent resource in this area:

Hello
Glad to be meeting and working with other edu peeps.
Forgot to mention..
I'm w/ Harrison School District 2 in Colorado Springs, CO. We have approx 25 sites (multisite install) and am building an Intranet.
We have stuff in common
Good to see who you are. I think we should talk. We have fewer sites than you. On our school district website, we have an Intranet but it is not much used.

some may want to check out aegir
Anyone interested primarily in centralized drupal hosting, ie management of multiple installs in central fashion.... might want to go next door where one of the leaders of the Aegir project will be demo-ing the Aegir hosting framework.
Aegir lets you create/clone/migrate/copy/backup sites from a drupal based web interface. It has support for clients, ssl, clusters, and lots of other bits. It is highly extensible. The new version (soon to be 1.0) has multi-server support. Prior versions are considered production ready (their version numbers confuse some but it's more about a feature roadmap than stability as evidence by some of the commercial aegir hosts here).
In addition to handling the nuts and bolts of drupal hosting, the aegir team is really good at best practices and the aegir framework helps facilitate them (ie drush, drush make, installation profiles, etc). On monday, there was a guy there who set up a 2,000 site aegir install base (and in a far earlier version of Aegir)
